Many companies and organizations conduct premeditated strategies to support their community as a way to promote their businesses. It is difficult to see the heart in these endeavors. Not so with Jay and Lisa Yerkes, Owners of Yerkes Construction based in Chestertown, Maryland. On Saturday May 28th the Chestertown Tea Party Festival Committee honored the Yerkeses with the 2016 Edna Ross Award at this year’s festival.  This community award was established in 2011 to honor Ross and all she had done for Chestertown. It has since been given annually to a local business person for outstanding service to the community.

This dynamic couple is multi-faceted in the way they willingly give to the community. For instance, Jay and his wife Lisa are advocates for the humane treatment of pets. This past spring they donated their resources for a Kent County Humane Society fundraiser. With a visit to their offices one might meet one of the many strays they have taken under their wing.  An avid marathon runner, Jay approached the Kent Center which provides daytime vocational and other skill services to adults with disabilities in the Upper Shore of Maryland area about a Run/Walk Club for the Center. ” Jay and Lisa Yerkes are two of the most generous people I have ever met,” said Karl C. Perkins, Athletic and Activities Coordinator for the Kent Center. “Jay has inspired our guys to get out and get active….he actually comes out and works out with the Kent Center adults and takes them on excursions like fishing trips.”

Community support is an on-going endeavor for Yerkes Construction, whether its teaming up with the Washington College Habitat for Humanity and providing gratis construction work for families in need or donating time and money to save Historic sites such as the Grand Army of the Republic Building (Sumner Hall) in Chestertown. If you get an email from Jay you yourself are inspired as signed below each email is this quote:

“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”
